Ways to Save When Traveling Overseas
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or plan to head overseas for the first time, there are many simple ways to cut costs without impacting on the fun or comfort of your trip.
Thumbing through well-researched, up-to-date guidebooks helps in discovering little-known delights- and also helps to save money.
Countries differ but, when it comes to shaving costs, here are some general rules to apply.
MONEY
Never change money at hotel reception desks.
Foreign exchange is an easy profit source for hotels. Staff may tell you their exchange is competitive, but, hotel rates are almost always terrible.
In many countries, money-changer kiosks offer better rates than banks- but not always. Exchanging on the street is begging to be ripped off.
It’s a good idea to have some local currency when arriving in a country. But do a little checking: sometimes it’s better to change money on arrival at the airport rather than in your own country. Also, try and convert what currency you have left at the airport rather than after you get home.
Getting local cash from the ATM is generally cheaper than exchanging money- but check your card will be accepted.
You may also consider having some travelers’ cheques issued in local currency before you leave home to avoid unfavourable exchange rates. To get around paying fees, instead of cashing the cheques at local banks, buy something small with a large cheque and use the change.
CREDIT CARDS
Credit cards are a handy way to carry money, as they save on transaction costs and offer reasonable rates of exchange.
The trick is to deposit enough money on to the card to fund your trip before you leave so it acts as a debit card instead of a credit card. Withdrawing money from a credit card that isn’t cashed up is treated as a cash advance.
Withdrawals generally attract a high interest rate which kicks in immediately. The cost of whatever you bought with the cash you withdrew will multiply before you’ve landed back on Australian soil.
Also, take more than one credit card. Don’t assume one credit card will be accepted absolutely everywhere. A good combination is a Visa or Mastercard and an Amex or Diners. Carry the cards separately in case one goes astray.
Finally, keep all receipts from credit card transactions in case you need to dispute any unauthorised charges later.
ACCOMMODATION
You won’t get a good accommodation deal if you don’t ask for one. Smaller hotels in general are likely to offer good rates on the day if they have rooms available.
The larger international hotels are less likely to have last-minute discounts but it’s worth asking if there are any special deals for which you might qualify.
If you want to travel in style but remain cost-conscious, consider the hotels’ executive floors. These upgrades can save you money since they usually include breakfast in the club lounge, free Internet access, coffee and snacks all day- and happy-hour cocktails.
Self-catered accommodation is often the cheapest option for families and groups.
Sometimes, travel-and-accommodation deals are best when it comes to saving some money. Packages often include air fares, discounted hotels (commonly with breakfast), transfers and perhaps optional city tours. Some may even include car rental.
Ski resort packages often include bed, breakfast and dinner, lift tickets and equipment hire- this can be a hassle free way to travel, especially if you’re staying in an on-snow lodge.
GO OFF-SEASON
If escaping the crowds isn’t a big enough incentive to travel off-peak, the prospect of saving on accommodation, attractions and airfares may convince you.
Traveling to Asia in the main wet season or Europe in February or March, for example, will be vastly cheaper.
But you have got to look at why it’s off season. Traveling to Europe in winter if you don’t like the cold may be miserable no matter how good the savings.
FLIGHTS
The earlier you book a flight, the cheaper it will be. The cheapest fares tend to be the ones that sell quickest. It really does pay to get in early.
FOOD
Opt for hotel packages with breakfast included. Gorge from the buffet to prevent those lunch-time hunger pangs.
Shopping malls often have food courts where locals lunch cheaply.
Raid supermarkets: in Europe (or Euro-Style destinations such as New Caledonia) they’re a cheap source of tasty items to consume at the hotel.
DRINK
Shun in-room mini-bars. This old rule is often disregarded in quests for middle-of-the-night bottles of water. Buy water from a corner store before returning to the hotel.
SHOPPING
Don’t forget to barter when you’re out shopping, particularly if you are buying in bulk, but remember to check the customs rules first.
Bargains are only bargains if you don’t have to leave them behind when you return home. See www.customs.gov.au for the latest rules.
If bartering doesn’t get you anywhere, ask traders to drop the price if you pay cash.
Exploring on your own away from over-priced tourist spots is a good way to save on meals and souvenirs. If you go to the local shops you’ll pick up better bargains and they are probably more authentic.
GETTING AROUND
Public transport isn’t as terrifying as it seems. In South Korean cities, for example, subway lines, stations and exits all have numbers- study a map and memorise a few numbers.
Saving both time and money is Bangkok’s Skytrain (ticketing staff speak English). Check for day-trip deals on transport systems.
KEEPING IN TOUCH
Avoid in-room phones and hotel business centers for Internet access. Activate international roaming on your mobile phone (by calling your phone company) but don’t leave your mobile phone on all the time since you will be charged when your caller calls from Australia to your overseas destination.
Instead, tell friends and family that your phone will only be on for a specified hour. Otherwise, switch your international roaming to only making outgoing calls.
People should preferably e-mail you. Set up a free web-based e-mail account such as Hotmail or Yahoo, and check your e-mail at a dirt-cheap Internet cafe.
AVOID DEBT
Whatever you do, try not to come home laden with credit card debt

Visiting Santa Monica
Santa Monica, California is a beautiful, small city that is situated on the Pacific Ocean and within the City of Los Angeles. Sana Monica is the location to beautiful beaches, thousands of tall thick palm trees and high-rise glass hotels. Every year millions of people visit southern California, a visit to Santa Monica for its sunshine, fun and surf must not be missed.
The main area of interest when visiting Santa Monica is along the shoreline where Ocean Ave is the dominant thoroughfare for which shopping, dining and accommodations all extend off into separate streets. Tall and thick palm trees line the sidewalks for the entire length of Ocean Avenue. Ocean Ave runs in a north/south direction allowing visitors a constant view of the Pacific. Ocean Avenue runs along a cliff and below the street is where the beaches and bike paths begin. Dozens of hotels line Ocean Avenue and face out on to the Ocean affording guests spectacular views. Several dining options are available along Ocean Ave as well from five star restaurants to smaller cheaper family dining outposts that only seat a few. Several streets such as Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica Blvd, Broadway and Montana intersect with Ocean Ave and offer visitors additional choices in dining and shopping.
The 3rd St. Promenade is only 2 blocks inland from the beaches and Ocean Avenue. In the last decade the Third Street Promenade has transformed itself into one of the biggest shopping destinations in Los Angeles. Extending almost half a mile from Wilshire Blvd down to Broadway, the Promenade is a street closed to cars and consists of a brick road, lined by palm trees, kiosks and dozens of high end stores from home furnishings to fashion. On the weekends many street performers come out and perform a variety acts from music to acrobatic stunts as crowds gather and watch. There are many dining opportunities on 3rd Street to chose including pizza and Chinese. There are two movie theaters and a major mall under construction slated to open in late 2010 at the termination point of the Promenade at Broadway. Several streets run parallel to Third Street including 4th Street and 2nd Street, each of these streets also provide a variety of shopping and dining opportunities as well.
Extending off of Ocean Ave and out into the Pacific is the Santa Monica Pier. With a rollercoaster, Ferris Wheel, stalls, aquarium and fishing, the average visitor can spend a day on the pier. The pier is friendly to families and allows for a variety of fun activities. The pier just celebrated its 100th anniversary and installed a brand new Ferris wheel; where at the top guests can see clear down into Venice Beach, up to Malibu and out to Catalina Island. At the base of the pier are many skate and bicycle rental kiosks where the active traveler can venture up and down the coast to Venice.
Santa Monica is a trip in itself and when visiting Los Angeles appropriate time should be made to spend a day or two in this beautiful neighborhood on the beach. In good traffic, Santa Monica is only less than thirty minutes from Hollywood and twenty from Beverly Hills.

What to Expect of Apartments in Rio?
Copyright (c) 2008 Andre Skowronski
Many tourists have sent me questions and concerns about renting vacation apartments in Rio. Frequent questions include payment options, best neighborhoods, included amenities and average prices. For this reason I decided to write a simple guide on how to chose an apartment rental in Rio.
The first thing you need to know when renting a vacation apartment in Rio is that it’s a legal well established business within the tourist industry in Brazil. Many Brazilians and even foreigners buy apartments in Rio exactly for this purpose. Investors commonly buy used apartments and renovate them to offer the best comfort as beach rentals. Let’s now discuss the main points you should be note when selecting an apartment.
Prices: prices in vacation apartments in Rio can vary significantly. Generally the more luxurious, the more expensive are the apartment prices. Beachfront apartments also carry a premium in their prices. Another rule is obvious, the greater number of rooms, the pricier it gets. If you travel with a group of friends, price per room can decrease substancially. Renting apartments with more than 3 rooms can be a wise option.) Prices are normally charged by number of nights. That is, if an apartment costs US$ 100.00 p/day, 10 nights will be US$ 1000.00. Discounts can be considered above 30 days rentals. Prices per day can decrease for longer periods, since a longer stay will be booked. How much per day? Usually fair apartments can be found starting at US$ 90,00 a day. Two bedrooms apartments in Ipanema, Lagoa and Leblon, all beach neighborhoods can vary from US$ 150 to US$ 300 a night, on average. If the apartments are located in high floors, if they have private pools and/ or hydro massage bath tubs, prices can rise significantly.
Locations/ Neighborhoods: Like any other major city in the world, prices vary by per different neighborhoods and zones. Most expensive apartments are all found on the South Zone (called “Zona Sul” in Portuguese), specifically in the following neighborhoods: Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa, Copacabana, Flamengo and Botafogo. Barra da Tijuca, once a separate beach neighborhood, also offers some very luxurious flats and residence services, but you need to have a car to drive around since public transportation is limited there. Ipanema, Lagoa and Flamengo have been considered the safest neighborhoods, since prostitution is heavily combated in those areas. Copacabana is a universe on its own, with a many apartments to choose from. Copacabana is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Rio, with night-clubs, beach and lot´s of culture. Need some one liner neighborhood highlights? Here they are: Ipanema: Fashion shops, trendy restaurants, and gorgeous beach. Leblon: upscale shopping mall, excellent restaurants and bookstores. Lagoa: nice park, tranquil night kiosks around lagoon; Copacabana: wide apartment selection, public transport, eclectic environment. Flamengo: family type neighborhood, Flamengo Park, famous street bars. Barra: beautiful beach, Miami hype constructions.
Rental Agencies: The most popular way to find a rental agency is through the web. The are innumerous rental agencies to choose from in the wonderful city. The great majority of vacation rentals in Rio are serious in their business, delivering what they claim. Most of them display a list of apartments they own or represent, either by neighborhoods or by number of rooms. They present up to 10 pictures of the rentals and a small description of the amenities and apartment surroundings, so you can familiarize with the region. When you are choosing the apartment, first try to identify yourself with the neighborhood you are staying in, as well as your budget. This will save you time and help in the selection process. Once you know what where you want to stay and how much you can afford, browse through the apartments list and see if there is anything you like.
Once you see something you like, send an e-mail to the company stating which apartment you have in mind, and a second or third option, case that apartment is taken. (Many rentals offer an on-line bookings calendar view, which may save you time as well.). To find a list of rentals agencies in Rio, type in Google “Vacation Apartment Rio” and check the results. You will find more than 10 agencies only in page 1 of your search.
How are Payments made: Most Rental agencies in Rio take Pay-Pal, money wires, credit cards and cash. A reservation deposit is necessary to secure your apartment reservation. Companies have different reservation deposits policies. Reservation deposits can vary between rental agencies. Once the rentals agency identiofies the reservation deposit, an e-mail confirmatin should be expected. The amount due should be then paid upon apartment entrance. Most companies however do not return reservation deposit for Carnival and New Years holidays, due to great demand. Check the cancellation policy in company’s website or via e-mail.
Amenities: Vacation apartments in Rio also vary a lot in terms of their included amenities. By default, basic included amenities include cable TV, complete kitchen, and Internet access. This would be the minimum acceptable. One level above, rentals can provide CD/DVD player, clothing washing machine, coffee machine, and safe. Luxury apartments in Rio and residence service flats additionally can offer hot-tubs, private pools, and even gourmet kitchen utensils.
Do´s and Don’ts: Another fundamental tip when selecting an apartment is to be attentive in the reservation process. Once you have decided for the rentals agency and the apartment in mind make sure you have all your questions and concerns promptly answered. It is the agency’s obligation to make sure you feel comfortable with your choice. Your rentals contacts should be courteous and receptive. If during the reservation process you are not satisfied or comfortable with your rentals contact, be sure to change your agency. If you have any friend in Rio de Janeiro, ask him/her to visit the apartment. This procedure is pretty common. Another tip would be to try to plan ahead. As soon as you have your travel dates secured, start your “apartment hunting”. Be sure to ask for a contract as well, and read all of the buildings do´s and don’ts.
Observing these tips and hints, you will not regret having selected an apartment rental instead of a hotel. I truly believe Rio is a city full of wonders and hosts the friendliest people on earth. Buy the latest fashion trend bikinis and flip-flops, but remember that the best vacation apartments in Rio get filled up very quickly especially during New Years and Carnival. So make sure you book well in advance.

Dubai – is it Exciting or Just a Building Site?
Over the last 75 years, Dubai has transformed itself from a being a simple â??pearl-diving centreâ?? into a powerful international trading hub with impressive worldwide links and an ever changing ethnic identity. With a huge contingent of foreign manual workers from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan and service industry employees mostly from the Philippines, Middle East, Europe and Australasia, itâ??s not difficult to see why the changing population is increasing so rapidly.
Much of the Gulf region is experiencing extraordinary levels of growth, with the city of Dubai currently being at the fore-front. Although Dubai is intent on creating masses of future development projects for many years to come, it continues to provide the infrastructure to run in parallel. One of the newest development projects is the prestigious Tiger Woods Golf Complex â?? Al Ruwaya, which is due to open in September 2009. (See more about Tiger Woods Dubai). In reality, the expansion of Dubai is generally geared to causing the minimum of disruption to business, services, residents and tourists as much as possible. Experts seem to agree that Dubai is a unique fusion of both the old and new, and is a leading inspiration for others to ensue.
Dubai Highlights – What itâ??s really like
If you arrive late at night at Dubai Airport from, say a UK airport, getting through the Arrivals area could well be â??manicâ?? with waiting friends and relatives gathered around the main entrance in vast numbers. At least until your taxi finally gets you away. Book an overnight flight to arrive at breakfast-time and youâ??ll probably find it a very civilised experience and easy to spot those greeting you. First impressions usually count, and on the way to your chosen holiday accommodation or hotel, youâ??ll see lines of impressive glass panelled hotels and office blocks glistening in the sunshine. During spring and early summer youâ??re sure to pass some amazing floral gardens that border the interchanges along the Sheikh Zayed Road, their colours will astound you. In the heat of the Dubai desert, youâ??ll wonder how they can produce such wonderful sights. Get yourself settled in your chosen accommodation and youâ??ll soon be ready to explore the city, either by taxi or driving your own rental car. As a general guide for getting your bearings, road signs showing Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi are to the south of the city and signs showing Deira, Bur Dubai, and Sharja are all to the north. There are 3 main city roads that run almost parallel. First there is the Beach road running from a point adjacent to Port Rachid through Jumeirah to the Dubai Marina. The next is the Al Wasl Road which links the Al Bada district to Al Wasl, close to Jumeirah. The biggest and widest road in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Road, runs through Dubai right to Abu Dhabi with only a simple name-change to worry about. This busy road is still undergoing upgrading work and some modifications to the existing layout, which is partly due to the current development and construction of the new Dubai Metro system which runs alongside Sheikh Zayed Road with a number of stations en-route.Â
Where to stay â?? Desert Hotel, Beach Resort or Private Villa?
Privately owned holiday villas in Dubai are available to rent, and located around the southern and outer fringes of the city. Residential areas such as The Springs, The Meadows, Jumeirah Islands and Arabian Ranches are all well served with plenty of semi and detached villas for short and long term rent. Youâ??ll find many private villas with pools in Dubai but each of the newly built residential developments cater for those without pools by providing several â??localâ?? outdoor swimming pools with childrenâ??s play areas. Often located in pleasant landscaped gardens and surroundings, they are closely monitored on a daily basis with adequate security staff and lifeguards in attendance.
Youâ??ll find plenty of modern classy beach resorts to choose from, but Dubai is creating an enormous demand for an exceptional new range of â??sky-riseâ?? city hotels, that are being built mainly around the business and trade centre areas of the Sheikh Zayed Road. You will need to remember that, because only licensed hotel restaurants are permitted to serve alcohol, they attract business people, tourists and local residents who enjoy the western-style culture of social drinking hours. The popular Shangri-La provides a nightly buffet with an option price that includes alcohol. The Crowne Plaza, Dusit, Emirates Towers and The Fairmont hotels are just a few examples that can boast some individual and â??stunningâ?? architectural or design features, whilst also providing several restaurants that offer authentic cuisines from around the globe. Prior booking is always recommended.Â
In Jumeirah, the Madinat Al Qasar, Jumeirah Beach and the One & Only-Royal Mirage hotels are all firm favourites with previous guests and beach lovers alike. They offer guest rooms with stylish décor and quality finishes combining superb luxury amid ostentatious surroundings. Guests requiring larger suites can opt for a choice of quality room upgrades.
Then, there is the famous hotel, The Burj Al Arab. This is the worldâ??s first proclaimed 7-star hotel, a sail-shaped building thatâ??s also the worldâ??s tallest dedicated hotel. Itâ??s Dubaiâ??s iconic symbol, a major landmark. Being set slightly off-shore, with its own private security- controlled bridge for access, this magnificent hotel enjoys fabulous views over Dubai city, the Arabian Gulf, and now, the first purpose built off-shore Island, called Palm Jumeirah. The Burj Al Arab, meaning Arabian Tower, is an all-suite hotel with cascading waterfalls and computerised water displays that greet you on various levels. All areas exude opulence and boast palatial surroundings, sumptuous furnishings and beautiful Arabic décor. There are numerous lavish gold structures and matching colourful ornamental displays throughout, plus the largest atrium youâ??ll ever see. Guests are provided with their own personal butler who will tend to your every need. Without even a restaurant reservation, non residents will pay an entry fee to look around, but itâ??s an absolute must to book a Friday brunch at the hotelâ??s highest restaurant-Al Muntaha where youâ??ll see views to die for! Reached by an amazing high speed lift, this wonderful restaurant seems perched like a wedge, but has the most spectacular views over Dubai City and Arabian Gulf. Controversially, a full-height symbol of the cross features in the design at the rear of the hotel. This is only viewable from the sea or if you take a private boat trip around the Palm Jumeirah. Nightly illuminations with changing coloured lasers create a spectacular display for the nearby hotel and Madinat guests. Donâ??t forget to take the camera!
The nearest desert hotel would be Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa â?? a luxury spot out among the sand dunes, or Jebel Ali Golf and Beach Resort on the outer fringes of the desert. This resort overlooks Palm Jebel Ali just off-shore, which is currently under construction. Itâ??s much nearer to Dubai, but equally a great place to stay.
For sheer unadulterated luxury try a visit to the Al-Maha Desert Resort & Spa. Itâ??s located part way between Dubai and Al-Ain and has magnificent views of the Hajar Mountains and the surrounding dunes. This elegant and luxurious resort offers a unique and personalised Arabian nature experience. With the focus being on pure nature watching and conservation, it boasts a personal desert guide for your holiday duration, and a personal, heated infinity pool with fantastic views across the open desert. Animals, wildlife and guests all secluded and protected in over 80 square miles of desert conservation. No day visitors and probably no probably no non-guests allowed, this exclusive resort is the ultimate retreat, providing maximum privacy.Â
Beaches & Parks and the Environment
Whether you stay in hotels or residential accommodation, you will probably want to go to the beach sometime. If you are more interested in Arabic culture and heritage or want to shop in souqs, then Bur Dubai or Deira have city hotels that are ideally located. The Dubai Museum is very interesting, and there are opportunities to take an open top bus tour of the city with an information guide on board. The number one beach choice would have to be Jumeriah. It covers the best location from almost any point you can find along the coast. There are some fantastic views of Palm Jumeirah from The Madinat and Jumeirah Beach hotels own beaches, along with those of the famous hotel, Burj Al Arab.
There are several â??Publicâ?? beaches – Umm Suqeim beach, Kite beach and other stretches of beach around the The Oasis, Dubai Hilton and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi hotels that are nearest to the Dubai Marina.
Jumeirah Beach Park â?? being a favourite, gets very busy at weekends, but has a long stretch of sandy beach. It has excellent facilities for children, picnic tables, barbecues and several shop kiosks. Lifeguards are in attendance.
Safa Park â?? has excellent facilities for all the family. Thereâ??s a lake with paddleboats, barbecues, football pitch, waterfall and tennis courts.
Dubai Wildlife & Water-Park Sanctuary â?? has newly installed viewing platforms for bird-watchers. You may see hordes of pink flamingos which flock to the end of the Creek during winter months.
Creekside Park â?? has Childrenâ??s City, a themed activity centre and childrenâ??s museum that kids will love. There is plenty to do for all ages, both educational and creative, where all children can really join in.
Wild Wadi WaterPark â?? is an excellent water-park that caters for all, plus has some interesting, interconnecting rides. Safety lessons are on offer, and there are gentle rides for small children and nervous parents. With some awesome and scary rides for the bravest, you and your family could be in here quite a while. Youâ??ll be surprised how food and drinks are soon acquired and paid for. Itâ??s all great fun and not to be missed by anyone!
Dubai is generally a very clean city and litter has not become a problem, although the city employs plenty of workers to keep it that way. With increased building work reshaping the original desert and increasing levels of traffic congestion, air pollution has become a major concern. Citizens of Dubai create huge volumes of waste, but new recycling centres have now opened around the city to help cope with it. Off-shore oil spillages have forced government agencies to act, monitor and control sea pollution which threatens marine life and could also seriously damage essential desalination plants that the city depends on.
Shopping in brief
Dubai has a wealth of shopping facilities that you will find hard to beat almost anywhere else on the planet. During June is when the stores start their sales, usually lasting for a month, and all with massive reductions.
The Mall of the Emirates â?? adjoins the 5-star Kempinski Hotel. Itâ??s a huge Mall with escalators to all floors. There are excellent facilities and plenty of restaurants on all levels. Parking is easy, safe and well illuminated. The Mall is also home to Ski-Dubai, one of the worlds largest indoor ski resorts.
Ibn Battuta â?? named after the 14th century discoverer, is a large single storey Mall with individually Arabian themed areas including lots of facilities, restaurants and a multi-screen cinema.
Wafi City – provides top-of the- range stylish designer stores and products, plus some home furnishing outlets. Excellent facilities are provided throughout.
The BurJuman Centre â?? a newly transformed Mall with exclusive designer shops and boutiques.
Souqs – Bustling Souqs in Bur Dubai and Deira, offer gold, jewellery and Arabian antiques along with clothing, textiles and designer souvenirs, often sold at a fraction of normal retail cost. A selection of souqs can also be found at Karama and the Madinat.
Driving
Dubai has no real public transport system in place yet, so the best way to travel is usually by car. Although the traffic is increasing rapidly and hold-ups do occur, itâ??s generally the easy way to navigate your way around the city. Visitors must now obtain a current International Driving Permit (IDP) which is a strict requirement for all car rentals. They are available throughout the UK, from main post offices. Renting a car in Dubai does carry certain restrictions, so driving to or through other Emirates may not be possible and it is therefore best to confirm this when booking.
Religion & Culture
Dubai is still a Sheikh-dom and the Al-Maktoum family rulers are treated with total and utmost respect. Being an Islamic society, the UAE places certain restrictions on what can be displayed in public and what can not. Baring some parts of your flesh is strictly forbidden, and public displays of affection may also be frowned upon, so itâ??s best to always dress conservatively and to familiarize yourself with Arab etiquette before you travel. Muslims take their religion very seriously and needing to pray up to 5 times a day is not uncommon, even if it means stopping their lorry on the roadside to find a place to kneel. It is widely believed that anywhere in the city, you are rarely more than 500 metres from a Mosque, from where you may regularly hear the Muezzinâ??s familiar call to prayer.
Dubaiâ??s tolerant and modern life-style helps promote it as a safe and exciting destination for tourists. It blends well with society in general and is where both nationals and visitors co-exist quite amicably. Religion and tradition dictate much of the Emiratis way of life, like daily routines, personal relations and even what and where they eat and drink.
Best time to go
The United Arab Emirates lies directly across the Tropic of Cancer, meaning warm and sunny winters, but hot and humid summer months. Although everywhere is air-conditioned, sound advice is for families with young children to holiday during the cooler months from October through to April. Visit anytime from November to March and youâ??ll be sure of beautiful sunny weather most days. There is some rainfall in winter, but it would probably be very little, no more than just a short brief shower that quickly clears up. During the summer, Dubai hotels offer some exceptionally attractive accommodation rates, especially for June, July and August when many foreign workers return home for their holidays. To prevent dehydration, it’s recommended to drink plenty of bottled water and at regular intervals â?? 2 to 3 litres per day is quite normal, and keep in the shade as much as possible. Remember the sun is very powerful even if you canâ??t see it, so wear a hat when outside and use lots of high factor sun creams.
Dubai is a dream holiday destination. Thereâ??s so much to see and do, with stylish hotels and resorts, luxury villas and apartments to rent, great restaurants to dine in and numerous shops and local attractions to visit.  Enjoy it, Emiratis do.

Digital Signage: the Potential of Self-service Interactivity is Enormous
If you’ve been reading my blog postings for some time now, you now how excited I am about the potential of hybrid, interactive digital signage.
For those who haven’t ever before read my blog, let me summarize. Combining the ability of traditional digital signs to playback segment after segment of linear content (in other words, Item No. 1, Item No. 2, Item No. 3, etc.) with the interactivity normally associated with kiosk is hugely important. The traditional digital signage content can attract an audience; interactivity can hold them and direct them.
In June, new research from market research organization IHL Group underscored exactly why interactivity is an essential element in the future course of digital signage and the nearly unbelievable potential for upside growth. According to the researcher, transactions at self-service kiosks will exceed $607 billion in North America this year.
I hope you’re sitting down for this next tidbit. IHL Group projects the value of these self-service kiosk transactions will more than triple to in excess of $1.7 trillion by 2012. According to IHL Group Lead Retail Analyst Lee Holman, the research confirms what’s been seen over the past couple of years as all manner of self-service kiosks –everything from automated movie theater ticket sales kiosks to $1 DVD rental machines- grow in consumer popularity. In Hollman’s words, “consumers are showing a preference for self-service kiosk activity of all kinds.”
The research, “2008 North American Self-Service Kiosks,” documents how self-service kiosks are being used in six particular areas: self-checkout systems, ticketing kiosks, check-in kiosks, food ordering, postal systems and other retail kiosks. While the traditional digital signage component might not be appropriate for every self-service kiosk, it amplifies the potential of others.
For example, consider the movie ticket sales kiosk. Add the linear playback component of traditional digital signage and this sales kiosk instantly transforms into a sales promotion tool by playing back movie trailers of what’s showing in all the glory a high-definition display panel has to offer. Take that kiosk out of the theater lobby and place it in malls across the country, and you have a dual-purpose movie marketing machine that reaches potential customers who might not otherwise have given going to the movies a serious thought.
Or, consider an airline ticket kiosk. How often between flights have you walked by these kiosks and seen no busy travelers nearby. During these opportunities, couldn’t these kiosks offer linear playback of travel related goods and services? Certainly, the linear digital signage content should in no way detract from the primary mission of these kiosks, but a well organized implementation could prevent that and offer the potential of increased revenue in the form of advertising sales.
In my mind, the bottom line is this: The full potential of self-service kiosks may be even larger than IHL Group forecasts. If the interactivity of the self-service kiosks is matched up with the “carnival barker” role traditional digital signage can play, it’s conceivable that in the right situations this hybrid, interactive digital signage can drive the value of these sorts of transactions even higher.

Have You Been Downsized? Consider the Options for a Better Life
A friend was effectively eliminated from the traditional corporate work force in the early 1990â??s. It was traumatic. He was a college graduate. He had climbed the corporate ladder, rapidly, inexorably. He enjoyed a six-figure income, a second home, club memberships, prosperous investment accounts, wonderful benefit packages, a College investment plan for his three kids, sports cars and extensive travel. He was devastated! But, it became the best thing that ever happened to him, children included.
He went from regularity, a false sense of security and believing that he enjoyed a bit of that “Master of the Universe” complex, to really considering things he had taken for granted. Yeah, he was down for a few weeks. The house was glum. What was next? However, fairly quickly, he realized that he had to make things happen. Things werenâ??t going to be falling into his lap. He needed to start thinking like an entrepreneur.
It can be difficult re-learning to think like an entrepreneur. Why do I use the word “re-learning”? Simply because, we are all entrepreneurs at some point during our lives. A kid cutting grass, or working a paper route is a budding entrepreneur. The ritual of seeking a job requires a certain amount of entrepreneurial dash. Selling one-self to the opposite sex requires self-marketing and packaging. Presenting a thesis and selling arguments to professors is an entrepreneurial act.
Until we enter the corporate world almost all of our efforts share elements of entrepreneurial activity. Then the Mr. Big Corporation enters our lives and things seem to change. Report at this time, to this address, to Mr. Smith, your boss, for an agreed pay packet and a certain benefit package. Do this consistently, and fairly well, and we will move you along at our pace, the classic “Career Path”. Our actions become focused on job performance, judged by the Corporations standards. We adapt professionally. We also adapt our family and social life to the corporate ethos.
And then, that ethos was gone. My friend had to adjust and rapidly. Here are a few recommendations he found of great value in successfully making the change from a corporate to entrepreneurial lifestyle. First he broke his life into manageable components, a bit of introspection here.
Put Family First
Nothing earth shattering here, my friend had been a good parent. The children were a joy. And yet, he knew he could have attended more recitals, games and parties. He immediately began to be more active as a family group. He enjoyed activities together more and began to appreciate how quickly time slips away. When children grow up, they move on. That opportunity to be involved in a daily basis is gone. Donâ??t waste a minute of this precious time.
As much as possible, keep the children generally in the knowledge loop on current business affairs. All of a sudden he wasnâ??t going to work. How do you hide that? Also, make every effort to place a positive, forward- looking face on your reality.
Family Budget Priorities
My friend sat down and seriously analyzed current assets and liabilities. What did he spend that was not really a necessity? Starbucks? Dinners out? Movie Rentals? Underused automobiles? Pool Service? He discovered that his lifestyle could be well maintained by simply being more aware of his spending patterns and considering each purchase. Was it a need, or a want?
He also involved the children in spending decisions particular to them. Was a club necessary? What about that two week summer camp? A new formal might not be in the budget. They were remarkably mature and agreeable to the idea of relative shared sacrifice.
The Social Network
Be direct with friends and family. You have been outsourced, downsized or, God forbid, terminated (a better word than Fired!) No sense hiding the truth. Lying is such hard work. You have enough on your plate.
Where to Go for Income?
If there is one recommendation every corporate ex-employee should recognize it is this: Time is not your friend! After the shock of your release, a few tears, maybe a beer or two, immediately start assembling a Personal Business Plan. Honestly consider every detail in your current life situation. Including:
*Your Age     *Short Term Needs      *Relocation Options     *Window of Time     Â
*Savings       *Expenses     *Interests      *Family Flexibility     *Severance
*Health      *Corporate options      *Networks
Ben Franklin, our great Founding Father, used to settle difficult questions in his typically logical way. He took a piece of paper and drew a line right down the middle. On one side he marked a +, on the other column he marked a -. Then he considered each element of his problem and honestly placed that issue in the appropriate column. When he had exhausted his list, he counted the items assigned to each column. The side with the most entries indicated the proper decision for old Ben to take.
Do this, as honestly as possible. More often than not, there is an interest, a skill or hobby that you have always dreamt of utilizing as your source of income. It worked for him. He loved sales and marketing. That became his avenue of financial resurrection, and more importantly, it has lead to a freedom and lifestyle more exciting and varied than he would have considered possible. Making a living doing something you love is a blessing and many more people can achieve this today than ever before in history.
A cell phone, a computer, inter-net access and a web-site can be the basis of a business. Over 700,000 people alone make a living in full, or part, on eBay. Think like an entrepreneur. What did you do for Mr. Big Corp.? Approach similar clients and customers with a customized, targeted list of services. Put your years of experience to use. Research the market for opportunities. Write a realistic business plan for your new enterprise. There are more start-ups in the United States every year than every place in the world; combined. It pays off to be an entrepreneur in the USA!
Work from home. Attend trade shows. Consider being a re-seller from shopping mall kiosks. Contract out services to call centers. Be a consultant in your area of expertise. Send out Press releases on your project. Your network of past work associates and clients is your best future customer base. Partner with a Company already in your field, come aboard as an independent contractor. Work part-time for several firms until something opens in one. Wow them with effort, positive attitude, results, and creativity.
The Mr. Big Corpâ??s of the world do not owe you a career. They make decisions based on market realities. That shouldnâ??t mean that your continued success potential is limited or damaged. Your opportunities are open ended.

How To Start A Kiosk Business
Starting a kiosk business is not as difficult as some may think. If the thought of competing with giant retailers is a bit intimidating, then remember that many of these businesses have been brought down in recent times due to excessive size. In fact, many large companies like Kodak are entering into franchises with kiosks, and the result is that the services of these companies are reaching many different areas.
Types of Kiosk Businesses
There are two kinds of kiosk businesses. In the first type of kiosk business a large chain enters into a franchisee arrangement with a smaller kiosk. The owner of the kiosk then sells the products of this company. The second kind is the self-service kiosk, in which people can use the equipment at the kiosk without the intervention of the owner.
Other types of kiosk businesses differ according to whether they are mobile or fixed booths. People run mobile kiosk business through a cart, which is moved, while a booth is located on the same premises on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.
It is best for people who are just getting started to use a cart.
Getting a Cart
For beginners, it is advisable to rent a cart for a short period instead of buying one. This is less expensive than buying a cart, at least in the short term. Be prepared to shell out at least $500 per week in rent. The cost may go up according to the kind of item sold. Selling hot dogs does not require the kind of startup that selling watches might require.
When buying a cart, know the requirements. Do not buy or rent a cart simply because it is flashy or has an innovative design. Try to buy or rent a cart that will be flexible in terms of functionality. If the hotdog business does not work out, then the vendor may try the grilled fish business without making too many modifications to the cart.
While renting a cart, it is a good ideal to present a sketch of the cart to the seller or leasing company. This helps them to locate just the right cart.
Setting up a Kiosk in a Mall
The mall administration may lease out a cart to someone who wants to set up a kiosk in their mall. Depending on the location of the mall, the rental varies. In addition to rent, some malls might even ask for a percentage of the earnings. Renting several kiosks in prime locations can cost at least $2000 per month.
Starting a Kiosk Business: Professional Help
There are many service providers that can help in starting a kiosk business. They take care of the capital, the funding, the infrastructure and the other requirements, as well as giving advice on how to maximize the profits from a kiosk business.
