When I choose a name for my small business how will I know if someone else has the same name?
I am to be the middleman for a small business and I must choose a name. How would I know if I chose a name that another business already has? And, can more than one business have the same name if they are doing a different type of business?

my friend is a paralegal and we were disgussing this not too long ago…u have to search for the name uve chosen and if ne one else has the same name..but say a completely different business
u have to ask them for rights on sharing that name..or else they can sue ur business…hope that helps
Go to your states web site and then to the Secretary of State section. There you can do a search of company names.
Pick a name and try and register it with the state you are in. If there is no other name similar or identical, the registration will go through. If other names exist, it will most likely be rejected since one already exists. In most states, you can call and reserve a name until they get your paperwork.
